Scholarships

Officials Against Cancer offers three different scholarships to high school seniors who are planning on attending any post-secondary school or institution which advances their education. The value of each scholarship is $500, but the OAC Board reserves the right the increase number of scholarships available or the value of each scholarship. If the board chooses to adjust the value of the scholarships it applies to all scholarships offered.

To apply for the scholarships listed below, you must complete the following steps.  Applications that are missing one of the following items will not be considered.  If you have any questions, please email us at scholarship@officialsagainstcancer.org and a member of the committee will respond to you.

The deadline for all scholarships is April 15, 2020.

Scholarship Checklist

–  Fill out one of the three scholarship applications below.

– Before we go any further, we’d like to point out that we mention .pdf format frequently.

–  Upload a letter of recommendation from your school counselor (in .pdf format) using the link below.  The letter must be in .pdf format, it must be on school letterhead, and it must be written and signed by a counselor at your school.

–  Upload an essay of no longer than 350 words (in .pdf format) discussing your priorities for life after high school and how this scholarship would impact your abilities to achieve those goals.  You may emphasize and explain your education/vocational plans and goals.  Please identify your priorities, your goals, your life dreams, etc. If applicable, please discuss any connection you have to officiating as well.  This document must again be in .pdf format.

Perry Sharp Memorial Scholarship

The Perry Sharp Memorial Scholarship is named after Perry Sharp, a dedicated athlete and basketball official who lost his life to Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia in 2009. Per request of the family, the Perry Sharp Memorial Scholarship is open to any graduating Junction City High School senior planning on attending a post-secondary school or institution in the upcoming year.

Meredith Grusing Memorial Scholarship

The Meredith Grusing Memorial Scholarship is named after Meredith Grusing, a long-time coach and volleyball official who lost her life to pancreatic cancer in 2009. Per request of the family, the Meredith Grusing Memorial Scholarship is open to any graduating Wichita East High School senior planning on attending a post-secondary school or institution in the upcoming year year.

Frank Whitmer Memorial Scholarship

Officials Against Cancer offers one at-large scholarship for graduating seniors planning on attending a post-secondary school or institution in the upcoming year year.  This scholarship is particularly directed towards direct family members of those who have given of their time to be umpires, referees, or officials of sports at any level. The scholarship is offered in memory of Frank Whitmer, a long time football and basketball official in the Wichita area who passed away in the summer of 2011.

Bill Linhart Memorial Scholarship

Bill Linhart was a passionate advocate of Officials Against Cancer as well as the founding and only President of this organization until his passing in 2018. Bill worked tirelessly to ensure the lasting memory of his friends Perry, Meredith, and Frank, and now we look to continue that work in his honor by offering a scholarship to the graduating students of Emporia High School. Bill was a long time basketball coach before seeing the light and taking up officiating football and basketball for many years. Per request of the family, the Bill Linhart Memorial Scholarship is open to any graduating Emporia High School senior planning on attending a post-secondary school or institution in the upcoming year year.
